As the late Congressman Jack Kemp said, “If we have better ideas, we will win.” In Illinois, the Republican Party has a good chance to win if we’re bold and stand firmly for lower taxes, less spending and real reform. There should be a GOP “Contract with Illinois” based on a commitment to cut property taxes by 10 percent and roll back the 32 percent increase in the income tax rate that was passed in 2017.

Crystal Lake – State Rep. David McSweeney has filed a bill that could allow voters to eliminate townships and transfer their responsibilities and assets to McHenry County officials.
On Friday, the Barrington Hills Republican filed House Bill 4244, a proposed law that applies only to the 17 townships in McHenry County and puts abolishing townships at the top of McSweeney’s legislative priorities.

Rep. David McSweeney (R-Barrington Hills) seems hopeful that the timing might finally be right for the property tax proposal he’s been promoting for a long time.
“Consolidation of local government is the best way to bring about longtime change and lower property taxes,” McSweeney said during a recent appearance on the "Illinois Rising" radio show, co-hosted by Dan Proft, who also is a principal in Local Government Information Services, which owns this publication. “The ultimate vision has got to be giving voters the ability to eliminate and consolidate on the best path to lower property taxes.”

Directing his questions to Illinois Department of Public Health Director Nirav Shah and Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs Director Erica Jeffries, McSweeney wanted to know why the public was not immediately informed of the Legionnaires' disease outbreak at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy in 2015, which has since caused 13 deaths.

President Reagan later said cutting taxes was a priority because, “The whole thing could be boiled down to a few words – freedom, freedom and more freedom.”

The controversial tax credit handed out to some businesses, but not all, expired months ago and a couple of Illinois state representatives says good riddance.
The Economic Development for a Growing Economy tax credit, known as EDGE, provided special tax incentives to certain businesses to encourage those companies to locate or expand in Illinois, but the program was criticized for not having enough checks and balances. Even Gov. Bruce Rauner said EDGE needed to be reformed to ensure it only focused on job creation, not retention.
